The use of Web tehnologies and streams for real time assessment of air quality in the city of Zagreb

This paper shows how to apply modern information and communication technology to provide effective real-time dissemination of air quality information in an attempt to raise public awareness about air quality and health impacts. Focus is given to web services-based architecture and the main functionalities of an on-line subsystem for urban real-time air quality monitoring and assessment. A stream database was used to collect data from automatic air quality monitoring stations. Continuous queries over data streams enabled the high-speed processing of a large number of data and the ability to easily connect to automatic stations. Thereby, automatic real-time validation of continuous measurements of concentration values of parameters from automatic monitoring stations is performed alongside the calculation of air quality indexes. For the first time in Croatia, the air quality index has been introduced to the City of Zagreb according to best European practices such as the Common Air Quality Index. The developed web application for real-time air quality monitoring of the City of Zagreb presents air quality indexes on a digital map together with notifications about the possible health impact to the general population. The on-line subsystem described in this paper represents a crucial component of a more comprehensive integrated information system developed by the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health. For the first time in Republic of Croatia, the air quality index is introduced in the City of Zagreb according to the best European practice such as Common Air Quality Index. Methodology for calculation of air quality indexes are presented using calculation grid for the CAQI defined by CITEAIR II project. To enable the both reporting in national as well as international level the air quality indexes are connected with the two categories of air quality prescribed by the Croatian law. Web application for real-time air quality monitoring of the City of Zagreb presents air quality indexes on digital map together with notifications about possible health impact and it has shown very good response among the general population. Presented technical solution for real-time air quality monitoring including stream databases, continuous queries over data streams and web services have proven to be effective and stabile for the collection and processing of the data streams from automatic monitoring stations.
