Effect of Pt-based chemotherapy on bioavailability of trace elements in serum of men with testicular cancer
Large amounts of Pt introduced into an organism during Pt-based chemotherapy may affect the bioavailability of other trace elements. We determined the concentration of Cu, Se, Zn, As, Cd, Pb and Pt in serum of 55 patients with testicular cancer before and after Pt-based chemotherapy, as well as basic distribution of these elements among serum protein fractions. The results show significant decrease of serum Cu, Se, Zn and Pb, and significant increase of Pt after chemotherapy. Distribution profiles of Pt, Se and Zn among serum protein fractions include a dominant peak obtained at the elution time of 24 min corresponding to the medium molecular mass (MMM) proteins, and is most likely related to albumin. The results suggest that Pt competes with Se and Zn for the same binding sites in MMM proteins which affect their bioavailability. The imbalance between trace elements could lead to increased sensitivity and to resistance to treatment resulting in slower recovery of patients.
