Classical swine fever situation in Croatia in 2008.

Classical swine fever (CSF) is worldwide viral disease which is very contagious for domestic pigs and wild boars but also for hunting dogs and other carnivora. Consequently CSF cause heavy losses in the rural economy. Conformable with EU regulations in the Republic of Croatia were introduced control policy with carefully diagnostic procedures. In Croatian Veterinary Institute during 2008 year have been examined 49018 samples derived from domestic pigs and wild boars from eleven counties of Republic Croatia. The samples were tested for the presence of CSF virus by antigen ELISA, virus isolation, RT-PCR and Q-RT PCR. In total 450 of the samples derived from domestic pigs and 52 samples derived from wild boars have shown to be positive for CSF virus. The majority of positive samples originated from borderlines Sisak county (Moslavina) and Vrbanja teritory (Slavonia). The last case of CSF virus detection in domestic pigs is confirmed on March 3rd 2008 in North- Western part of Croatia and in wild boars in Eastern part of Croatia.
