Bilateral bone foramen connecting anterior cranial fossa and the orbital cavity: a case report
The floor of the anterior cranial fossa is composed of the orbital plates of the frontal bone , cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone, and the small wings and front part of the body of the sphenoid bone. Lateral portions of anterior cranial fossa form the roof in the orbital cavities and support the frontal lobes of the cerebrum. Anterior cranial fossa has several important openings which serve for a communication between the intracranial structures and structures in orbital cavity. We are presenting a specimen of adult human skull which is a part of the macerated skulls collection at the Department of Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy, University of Zagreb. The skull underwent standard maceration process, after which a clean skeleton was obtained. During the preparation process age and sex of the specimen donor was determined. A bilateral opening was accidentally found, and was located on lateral and posterior side of cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone. This opening represents communication between anterior cranial fossa and orbital cavity. Skull opening was further characterized using computerized tomography. Sections obtained with computerized tomography, as well as 3D reconstruction are presented on this poster presentation. Openings connecting anterior cranial fossa and orbital cavity have alrready been reported in the literature, although, in relatively small number of cases. Our case report is emphasizing the presence of these communication foramina and we believe they should be taken into account from both clinical and morphological aspects since they may contain important anatomical structures.
