Possibilities of applying brine in fertilization of cabbage

Application and efficiency of brine and it's impact on yield and mineral composition of cabbage was determined based on the results of fertilization experiment in the Josipdol field, location "Carevo Polje" in 2013. This research was embarked from the fact that sour cabbage and brine not only have healing properties which are attributed to large quantities of C, E and A vitamins, but along with sodium chloride contains significant amounts of potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus (1180 mg K L-1, 732 mg N L-1 and 170 mg P L-1). Therefore, with the proper application, brine can be used in fertilization and plant nutrition. Fertilizer trial was set up as randomize block design with eight variants in three replications (variety Krautman). The results showed that the risk of soil contamination with brine is negligible because there were no significant differences in soil physical and chemical properties between the variants treated with brine and variants treated with mineral fertilizers. Negative impact of the brine on the reduction of soil pH was not determined regardless of applied concentrations of the brine. Cabbage yield on the variant treated with pure brine was approximately the same as on the variant treated with 1000 kg NPK 7:20:30, and 30-40% higher compared to the control variant (without fertilization). Based on the results of the research, application of the brine as a fertilizer on cabbage and other vegetable crops is possible considering the amount, type and the way of application according to soil physical and chemical characteristics, requirements of the culture and the climate.
