Hair aluminum status in Croatia

Aluminum (Al) is omnipresent non-essential trace element in the human diet and an essential component of numerous industrial products and processes. The population environmental Al exposure risk is increasing, but there is no available long term biomarker for the population exposure assessment. In this observational, cross- sectional, exploratory, prospective epidemiological study we have studied hair aluminum (Al) in 1073 (339 men, 734 women) apparently healthy adult subjects from the capital city region of Zagreb, Croatia. Hair samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. We used the logistic bioassay sigmoid curve of median derivatives to further analyze natural distribution of Al in the hair. Men accumulated more HA1 then women (median men=7.64 pg-g"1 vs. median women=6.18 pg-g"1). The physiologically tolerable range in the linear part of the sigmoid curve is D3 - U3 (2.39-27.74 pg-g"1) for men and d3 - u3 (1.83- 20.92 pgg"1) for vvomen. Hair Al concentrations below or above this range indicate low (threshold) Al exposure or the excessive environmental Al exposure, respectively. Here we presented a novel concept on how to assess the environmental Al exposure risk by analyzing its frequency distribution properties in the hair. For the first time we report the unequivocal difference in Al deposition in the hair between men and women.
