Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seed oil production and quality
We are witnessing today the increasing popularity of industrial hemp and its products. The industrial hemp is said to be an eco-plant because the farming is not too demanding. In the past few decades, the Cannabis sativa L. hemp variety has been unfairly neglected because of its similarity to the illegal kind used as a narcotic. One of the products is hemp oil, which contains both essential fatty acids and on the other side, by-product of oil production - cake which contains a high content of protein with all 9 essential amino acids. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the relatively new green environmental technology - supercritical CO2 extraction. Supercritical CO2 as a new “green” solvent have been considered extensively in recent years and has proven to be highly desirable solvent in separation processes since it is non-toxic, non-flammable, odorless, tasteless, inexpensive and readily available in large quantities, and because it is an environmentally friendly solvent. By selecting the relevant process conditions of supercritical extraction it is possible to obtain hemp seed oil with physical or nutritional properties of interest to the food industry.
