Incidence of pneumonia in dogs and cats

Pneumonia in dogs and cats can be caused by a wide range of etiologic agents. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and etiology of pneumonia in dogs and cats. In this study archived data from the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Zagreb, University of Zagreb, collected from 626 dogs and 193 cats in a three year period were analysed using gross and histopathological findings. The results showed that pneumonia was found in 35 dogs (5, 6% of all surveyed dogs) of which it caused death in 7 dogs. Pneumonia was found in 33 cats (17, 1% of all surveyed cats) of which it caused death in 16 cats. Bacteriological analysis showed that most frequently isolated bacteria in dogs were Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas sp. and in cats Escherichia coli and Pasteurella multocida. Parasitological analysis confirmed one case of Ascaris sp. and one case of Microfilaria repens infection in dogs. In cats 2 cases of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus invasion and 2 cases of Toxocara cati invasion were confirmed. Pneumonia was rarely the primary cause of death in dogs, while in cats it caused death more frequently. In both dogs and cats young animals were most commonly affected. Interstitial pneumonia was most often found in dogs while in cats the most common were intestitial pneumonia and purulent bronchopneumonia. According to the results of this research pneumonia in dogs and cats is occasionally encountered and rarely causes death which corresponds with literature data.
