An electrochemical study on effect of oral antiseptics on the corrosion stability of NiTi orthodontic wires
In this research two commercial Ni-Ti orthodontic wires are examined. One of them has an aesthetic rhodium coating while the second one is bare Ni-Ti alloy. The corrosion stability of these wires is examined in solutions of three commercial oral antiseptics. Studies are performed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic polarization. In this way the susceptibility to both general and localized corrosion is determined. After corrosion tests the surface of wires is examined by scanning electron microscopy. Results of this study show that for each type of orthodontic wire different oral antiseptics have different effect on corrosion properties, in some cases the effect is negligible while in others antiseptic decreases corrosion stability of a wire. The possible causes of increased corrosion rate in some antiseptics are examined. Based on these results, the appropriate antiseptic can be matched to each wire type.
