Analysis of container transport by rail in the Republic of Croatia
Today's transportation system is unthinkable without the use of containers. In 2014, 648 million TEU units were transported, and the forecast for 2015 is a further increase by 6%. In 2011, the European Commission issued a White Paper – A Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area – with the main goal of a modal shift from road transport to environmentally- friendly rail and inland waterways. It also insisted on a greater level of containerization due to known advantages such as time and financial savings. Transport by containers thus plays a significant role in transport, and this will serve as the catalyst for future economic flows, including global, national and local. In terms of operations the transport of containers in the surrounding countries of the Republic of Croatia, or in the Baltic–Adriatic corridor, has been analysed ; freight transport in the Republic of Croatia has also been analysed with a focus on container transport. Thereafter, strategic measures for the development of container transport in the Republic of Croatia have been proposed.
