Neuroethics: Ethical Questions Related to Brain Imaging
Visualization of brain structures via modern techniques of functional brain imaging (PET, CT, fMRI) is used to diagnose diseases and disorders of the brain, but recently also to analyze behavior, levels of consciousness, etc. Namely, brain imaging allows correlation of the activities of certain brain regions with the physiological status and personality profiles, including different psychological states and traits, personality, intelligence, mental health, attitudes and inclinations towards violence. As our ability to see and analyze the brain becomes more sophisticated, the ethical and social implications of brain imaging are becoming larger, and its use raises important questions about the privacy of the mind and how decisions are made. In order to reach the final image, many layers of data processing, statistical analysis and interpretation are needed, so the assessment accuracy of such information, the complexity and possible false estimates and readings, also represent additional ethical problems.
