Assessment on RES Targets and Power System Development

Energy strategy of the Republic of Croatia set very ambitious targets for share of renewable sources in final energy consumption in 2020. The highest expectation for raising the share of renewable energy comes from electricity sector mainly because of a plan for building 1200 MW of wind power plants. High share of intermittent renewable sources brings a lot of challenges in planning of transmission network development, but also calls for fast national and regional electricity market development and preparations for changes in power system operation. Future revision of electricity market model and incentive scheme for electricity production from RES should provide framework how to ensure enough reserve for balancing intermittent production. A regional approach to ancillary services and balancing mechanism will be necessary for efficient integration of new wind power
