EVOLUTION OF KRUPPEL-LIKE FACTORS FAMILY OF PROTEINS
The Krüppel-like factors (KLFs) are family of regulatory proteins involved in many cellular processes, including proliferations, differentiations, development and apoptosis. They act as transcription factors that recognized CACCC element and GC-rich regions of promoters and bind DNA with their conserved carboxy-terminal three zinc finger domain. Network of numerous KLF family members plays determining role in regulation of cell growth and tumor progression and therefore this family and its interactions is extensively studied. 17 members of the KLF family have been identified and characterized in mammals. In order to clarify the origin of 17 human members of the KLF family, phylogenetic analysis was performed. It included numerous members of the KLF family from various species used to construct an evolutionary tree of the KLFs. We found that at least one member of the KLF family is present in all analyzed species ranging from the choanoflagellate Monosiga brevicollis to humans. Our analysis showed that human multi-member KLF family evolved through multiple gene-duplication events from only one gene that was already present in common ancestor of metazoan and choanoflagellates
