NEAT Project

There is a growing realisation and hence demand for the application of economics in animal health decision making, but economic tools and concepts on incentives around decision making are rarely well taught to animal health professionals. The NEAT's consortium aims to design and develop educational materials and methods, disseminate them to partners and end-users, and evaluate their wider impacts on society. NEAT (http://www.neat-network.eu/) stands for' “Networking to enhance the use of economics in anima I health education, research and policy making in Europe and beyond" and is a 3-year project co-funded by the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union. The project will end in 2015. The Royal Veterinary College, London is the lead coordinator of this consortium, providing financial management and strategic direction of the network activities. All 60 partners are accomplishing defined tasks with the support of the work package leaders, the core partners and the coordinator. Numerous associated partners (41) support the consortium and provide it with facilities or assistance that enhance the quality of work. All partners have strong links through training, research and consultancies to the animal health services and livestock sectors of member states. And many demand economic advice for animal health decision making. NEAT covers the major livestock producing areas of Europe and supports areas where livestock are less important and where skills in the use of economics are relatively weak. To ensure outreach of the consortium and education activities across the whole of Europe, NEAT is structured according to regional clusters and level of partner involvement. Four regional clusters (N, E, S, W) based on geographic and culturaI characteristics reflect the diversity and different levels of use and need of economics in animal health across Lifelong Learning Programme countries.
