Evaluation of composite sandwich panel structural variants for fixed car decks in the upper cargo hold of the Ro-Ro car and truck carrier
This paper presents various relevant aspects and results of the case study undertaken with the aim to determine feasible structural design of the lightweight, cost-effective and easily installable sandwich panels intended to carry vehicles loaded on three fixed decks inside upper fire zone of the cargo area of the MB513 car carrier being designed/built by the Uljanik Shipyard. For a predefined sandwich panel geometry and interaction with the supporting grillage, structural capability and compliance with the relevant BV rules of various feasible configurations of the GRP skin lamination and foam core material was evaluated, whereby structural response to various possible load cases was determined by numerical simulations, i.e. finite element method (FEM) analyses.
