Use of Simplified Micro Model of Framed-Walls with Openings for Evaluation of Shear Resistance Capacity of Members

Within the standards for design of structures for earthquake resistance EN 1998-1, the primary structural frame and the secondary non- structural infill wall are two distinct elements and therefore must be treated accordingly. Reports from earthquake affected areas have brought awareness that actually the interaction of these two elements and their composite action is crucial for the response. However, due to its complexity, it is difficult to determine changes in their interaction during the seismic response. In this work, for that purpose, we used previously calibrated simplified micro model of a single-bay single- storey framed-wall, in a computer program ATENA 2D. During the tests it was not possible to observe the changes of the internal shear forces in elements while macro-models are conceptual and unsuitable for this purpose. Pushover method with displacement control was applied to the drift ratio of 2 %, which represents the ultimate deformation (collapse) of the frame (infill collapsed at approximately 1 % of the drift ratio). The shear resistance capacity of the frame and of the infill wall was determined at different drift ratios for various opening types, sizes and positions. Results of each case were compared with the ones of the bare frame. It was found that shear distribution among the elements and overall shear resistance of the system depended upon the opening presence, size and position and was different form case-to-case. For the case of a door opening, additional shear capacity demand was observed at the place of potential plastic hinges. Considering different and complex shear demand of the elements during the response resistance, the infill wall and the frame are not to be observed as two distinct but rather as one composite element.
