Optimization of truss structures using basic variable neighborhood search
This paper explores the possibility of applying Basic Variable Neighborhood Search (BVNS) to the optimization of truss structures considering the cross sections of the members as discrete variables and applying constraints. The major task is to select the optimal cross-section areas of the truss members from a permissible list of standard cross-section areas that minimize the weight of the structures while satisfying constraints that limit structural response. The constraints imposed to the optimization were the allowable stress and the displacement limits on nodes. BVNS with two different approaches to handling constraints are applied to different benchmark cases structure. The obtained results were compared with the results of several other authors who have used different methods and approaches. The obtained results suggest that BVNS is quite comparable to the other approaches.
