Color and UV-Vis spectral changes in irradiated nacres
Nacre is a very beautiful and shiny material that is considered to be very sensitive to external influence. It can be found in a variety of colours and two samples of the same type of nacre practically never look the same. Because of its beautiful appearance it is often used for decoration on different objects. This way conservators have to deal with it when treating a variety of objects. In these cases the conservator usually does not know neither the origin of the nacre, weather its colour is natural or obtained by one of the common treatments for gaining colours, or if it has already been treated as part of a previous restoration. Since using gamma radiation for disinfection and disinsection is a very convenient and modern method that is used more and more often for different organic materials the question arises weather it is acceptable to irradiate nacre and up to which doses. Since no targeted research can be found in literature most of the conservators have prejudice to using this method in conservation of objects that have nacre on it. This is the reason why we studied two different types of nacre that we obtained from the Museum of Fine Arts and Crafts in Zagreb. The nacre is from their stock for conservation. Both types of nacre have an unknown past.
