DEVELOPING METALLOPEPTIDES FOR CATALYTIC APPLICATIONS
Short peptides that can bind Cu2+ ions through the side-chain functionalities and generate single species in the neutral pH range may be capable of performing numerous catalytic activities. Recently, Iranzo and co-workers developed two peptides, C-Asp and O-Asp, which bind Cu2+ only to the 3 His and 1 Asp residues at close to neutral pH forming the complexes [CuH(C-Asp)]2+ and [CuH(O-Asp)]2+. Herein, the new decapeptide OdPro-Asp was synthesised and its Cu2+ coordination properties studied using different spectroscopic techniques. The major copper(II) species observed for the OdPro-Asp peptide between pH 5.0 and 7.0 can be described as [CuH(OdPro-Asp)]2+. This species coordinates Cu2+ ions in the same way as the complexes [CuH(C-Asp)]2+ and [CuH(O-Asp)]2+. The possibility of applying the complexes [CuH(C-Asp)]2+, [CuH(O-Asp)]2+ and [CuH(OdPro-Asp)]2+ as catalysts was studied using quercetin and 3, 4-dihydroxide benzoic acid as substrates. The complexes reacted with quercetin, but did not react with 3, 4-dihidroxide benzoc acid at pH 6.2.
