Bridging the gap: a corpus study of borrowing in the capital markets register

This paper analyzes borrowing from English vocabulary in the register of capital markets through corpora compiled from three types of Croatian written discourse: online news reports dealing with capital markets and financial markets in general, reports on capital markets by bank analysts and legislation regulating capital markets in Croatia. The cases of lexical borrowing are categorized according to a basic division of four types – loanwords, calques, semantic loans and loan blends. Additionally, loanwords are analyzed according to the type of morphological and semantic adaptation. The goal of the paper is to determine if differences in borrowing techniques exist between the three types of discourse, and depending on the results, to formulate tentative conclusions regarding motives, specifically the role of the prestige of the source language as opposed to the need to fill lexical gaps.
