From mass tourism to sustainable tourism: comparison of three types of tourism development on the island of Brač

In the presentation we compare case studies of three local communities and tourist destinations on the island of Brač: Povlja (2008), Postira (2013) and Bol (2015). Data are gathered using semi-structured interviews with various types of actors within each local community, as well as documentation and statistical data analysis. In an attempt to address the problem of optimum sustainable tourism development of islands, the three places were chosen because they represent different types of tourism, economic, social and cultural development. We try to examine advantages and drawbacks of each place and possibilities for their future growth. Povlja shows signs of stagnation in every sense, especially in tourism, because there is no meaningful concept of capacity development. Accommodation facilities are mostly privatized but remain unused. Postira, on the other hand, presents an example of balanced sustainable development, a place with a mixed island economy and selective forms of tourism – the way of extending the summer season. Bol develops mostly towards mass tourism which leads to the loss of place identity and ecological unsustainability. The research also reveals that places on the island do not have the synergy necessary for the successful growth of tourism. Therefore, the question this presentation raises is not only achieving optimum results in tourism and developing the full potential of Povlja, Postira and Bol ; it is equally important to create joint development strategies for the benefit of all places on the island.
