"Domaća hrana": simbol identiteta i svakodnevna praksa
The basic idea with choosing home-made food as a research and thesis subject was to explore the heterogeneity of attitudes on the concept of home-made food and to determine the way this concept becomes the marker of identity of a particular community, at what level and at which moment. The main goal was to trace some of the common themes in home-made food narratives. The research was conducted in three regions of Croatia ; in Zagreb and Velika Gorica, in Hrvatsko zagorje and in Novalja on the island of Pag in the years of 2013 and 2014. Its ambition is neither to present the general picture nor an overview of food consumption practices and attitudes on the level of the whole of Croatia or even of the said counties, because the sample is not representative. Still, the different voices talking about the subject of home-made food become the basis for determining the goal of research. If the definitions of different agents defining home-made food are reduced to basic elements, we are left with the following: food substance (provisions, victual, raw material), recipe, person, the place and the manner of making food, recollections and feelings. Therefore, home-made food is a composition of the said elements. The common denominator is that all of this is to be familiar and our own, so generally (but not as a rule) it is not home-made if it is foreign and industrial.
