Sažetak
Severe Adriatic bora events are not uncommon, particularly during the winters. The first half of February 2012 witnessed exceptionally long period of unusually severe weather over the whole Europe attributed to the development of a large blocking anticyclone over Scandinavia and north-western Russia. The long-lasting overall situation brought to the broader Adriatic region the coldest part of that winter. One its manifestation over the Adriatic area was a sequence of severe bora events. The Adriatic bora wind is a gusty, cold, downslope, north-easterly air flow blowing in the lee of the Dinaric Alps. Major gaps and peaks in the Dinaric Alps act to develop bands of jets and wakes. The synthetic aperture radar instruments, with their high resolution imaging of wind-induced sea surface roughness, are particularly useful tool in exploring events like the bora. In this study we employ ENVISAT ASAR and TerraSAR-X data to document the February 2012 Adriatic bora episodes and use the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulations to aid the analysis. In particular, 4 Wide Swath C-band ASAR and 2 X-band TerraSAR-X Stripmap mode scenes were collected during the period extending from 2 to 13 February 2012. One-way nested three-domain WRF model setup was employed to simulate respective atmospheric conditions. In the analysis particular attention was paid to the sequences of WRF-model derived potential temperature and wind at 10m height and on the along-coast transects, temporally closest to the collected scenes. The combination of SAR data and WRF model simulations consistently chronicled the prolonged bora event and proved useful in elucidating some of its features.
