In a conversation with Geoffrey Barnard in 1978, John Cage tried to explain what he meant by anarchy, a term that he had mention many times before in his statements, as one of the central ideas of his art. Reading the conversation itself close, but also taking into account some other Cage's writings, as well as some of the works in question ("Child of Tree", "Branches", "Inlets") and Cage's poem "Anarchy, " the author shows that Cage's very notion of anarchy is an-archic, that is, branched, irreducible to one.
