Deuterium Excess in Daily and Hourly Precipitation Samples from Kastav, Croatia
Deuterium excess as defined by Dansgaard in 1964, d = delta2H-8·delta18O (‰), is used to determine the origin of a precipitating air mass. Prevailing precipitating air masses in Croatia come dominantly either from the Atlantic Ocean or from the Mediterranean Sea. Precipitation from the Mediterranean Sea is expected to be characterised by distinctly higher d-excess (around 20‰) than from the Atlantic Ocean where a d-excess of approximately 10‰ is expected (Rozanski et al.1993). However, it is known that monthly samples from continental Croatia show a higher d-excess mostly in the cold season (i.e., in autumn and the winter months) ; this raises the question whether the d-excess behaviour is indeed caused by a Mediterranean influence, or because it might not be the consequence of the known higher d-excess of snow. This problem has been addressed using daily and hourly (event) samples from Kastav station. The efficiency of the d-excess parameter for the origin of the precipitating air mass has been tested using the HYSPLIT program (Hybrid-Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) (Draxler and Hess, 1998) with its module READY for archived trajectories. We found that in most cases this study validates the use of the d-excess as a parameter to determine the origin of precipitating air masses, although the situation is not entirely clear yet since some samples show multiple source regions.
