Children's Participation in Familial and Institutional Context: Contemporary approaches and research
Theorists who deal with childhood indicate that childhood and children are being increasingly familialized and institutionalized as a result of contemporary globalizational changes. Educational policy justifies the stated processes in terms of children’s safety, well-being and high quality of life. Aside from this dominant adult perspective about children’s everyday lives, it is necessary to gain insight into children’s perspectives about the contexts in which they live, and, taking into consideration conceptualizations of children as active actors, possibilities for their participation in these contexts. This paper first provides the theoretical framework for researching childhood and children’s reality in two contexts: family and institutions for children (nursery, day care, preschool, school) and continues with a discussion about familialization and institutionalization of childhood and children.
