What is Preschool from the Children's Perspective?
Within the theoretical framework of childhood as socially constructed and structured, and children as competent social actors, this paper discusses children’s view of preschool and the position and role of children and adults in preschool. Children’s view of their preschool is important in elaboration of children’s activity (agency) in preschool. This paper discusses findings from two previously conducted preliminary research studies that could be placed within the qualitative, interpretative approach to research. The results indicate that children see their preschool as a place where they play and draw, and where children and adults have different positions and roles. Children seem to be aware of social positioning in their preschool. These findings could be used in elaboration of preschool practice, in terms of creating a setting in which children and adults learn together.
