Use of incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) in cement mortars: Effect of sewage sludge treatment
This paper reports on the use of incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) in cementitious materials. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) generate major quantities of sewage sludge with different chemical compositions and physical properties depending on the wastewater origin and the wastewater and sludge treatment. The combustion temperature used to incinerate sludge also affects ISSA properties. The influence of different ISSA samples obtained from two WWTPs in Croatia, produced using different sewage sludge treatment technologies, and incinerated at 800 and 1000°C on ISSA- cement mortars has been investigated. The effect of different water-binder ratios on the properties of ISSA containing mortars is also reported. The results demonstrate that there is significant potential for beneficially using ISSA in cementitious materials.
