An approximate analytic solution for the stresses and displacements of thin-walled composite beams with mono-symmetric cross-sections subjected to bending
An approximate shear deformable engineering theory of bending of thin-walled composite beams with open mono-symmetrical cross-sections is presented. It is assumed that the normal stresses in the transverse direction are small compared to the normal stresses in the longitudinal direction so that can be ignored in stress-strain relations. It is proved that the beam is subjected to bending with the influence of shear caused by forces in the plane of symmetry and in addition to tension/compression due to shear. The solution for the stresses and displacement are given in closed analytic form. Thin-walled cross-sections assembled of symmetric cross-ply and orthotropic unidirectional laminates are considered. The results are compared to the finite element method by several examples.
