IGBT Drive Circuit with Optimized Short-circuit Protection

An IGBT drive circuit with short-circuit protection is described and test results are presented. The difference from the conventional drive circuit consists of an added second output stage and in the method of sensing the collector voltage. The added second output stage enables independent control of du/dt and di/dt of the collector during turn-on. It is also possible to limit the short-circuit current with the activation of only one output stage. The desaturation circuit senses the derivation of the collector voltage. In this way time delays are minimized. The oscilograms of switching intervals and of the short-circuit current are given. Peak short-circuit current is two times the IGBT rated current and the total duration of the short circuit is about 2 microsecund.
