FAST METHOD FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF OCCUPATIONAL RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION ORIGINATING FROM OPEN SOURCES OF RADIATION

While handling open radioactive sources, contamination of the occupational environment can occur due to accidents or improper handling. After work with open radiation sources it is necessary to check for radioactive contamination in the occupational environment. This paper presents a method for the fast assessment of radioactive contamination using a survey meter. Measurements were conducted in occupational environments with higher possibility of radioactive contamination, at the nuclear medicine departments of three Croatian hospitals. The measurements were performed above work benches where contaminated area was marked by adhesive tape. The H*(10) rate measurements were performed with a survey meter Thermo Eberline FH 40 GL-10 and a mobile gammaspectrum identifier Mirion Technologies SpiR-ID. After H*(10) rate measurements, a swipe test was performed on the contaminated area using dry cotton pads. Swipe test analysis was conducted using high resolution gammaspectroscopy which yielded the type and activity of radionuclides picked up with cotton pads. Where radioactive contamination was measurable, gammaspectroscopic analysis determined that the predominant cause was radionuclide 99m Tc. The linear dependence between the ambient dose rate and surface concentrations of radioactive contamination was confirmed by calculating correlation coefficients. This linear dependence enabled us to determine the ambient equivalent dose rate limits that correspond to the radioactive surface contamination limits.
