Osijek as an Urban Text in Marija Jurić Zagorka’s Vitez slavonske ravni
The paper examines the construction of city space and city culture in Marija Jurić Zagorka’s novel Vitez slavonske ravni. Beginning with a brief theoretical excursus, the paper first traces the development of the city image in Western literature. The second section of the paper discusses how Zagorka’s novel constructs Osijek as an urban text using narrative methods such as the figure of the flâneur, city-mapping, the dichotomies of the centre and the periphery, of the urban and the rural, and of the global and the local/regional, heterogeneity, gender and the city, and the reliance on historical documents and city plans. The paper concludes by considering, in the light of possible objections, some consequences of my argument: it shows that the city culture of Osijek is created both as it is lived and as a text embedded in history, experience, use, and language.
