How neuroscience influences modern social sciences: The case of educational neuroscience

Modern social sciences are typically contrasted and rarely associated with natural and biomedical sciences or other related scientific fields. However, in recent decades the influence of these disciplines on social sciences is becoming more prominent as, for example, in the case of game theory or social neuroscience. An additional example includes educational neuroscience, an interdisciplinary area that unites neurosciences and educational sciences. The research within this field uses numerous neuroscientific methods that, among others, include the eye-tracking methodology. Within our presentation, we want to demonstrate how this method may be applied for investigating educationally relevant phenomena, and discuss more general implications of neuroscientific influences on educational and other social sciences. We will focus on research studies that investigated how eye-tracking may aid our understanding of mathematical and physical concepts. Specifically, we will present findings that reveal how students solve simple algebra equations, a skill relevant in numerous contexts, and use pictorial information for solving physics tasks. The results from these studies will show how tracking participants’ eye movements may aid in understanding individuals’ cognitive processes, in particular their attention and metacognitive processing.
