MDR Acinetobacter baumannii - new insight into the pathogenicity, resistance and therapy
Acinetobacter baumannii has become a "red-alert" human pathogen with exceptional ability to develop resistance to all currently available antibiotics on the one side compounded by unique mechanisms to survive in the diverse range of environments. Recent research on the pathogenicity of this organism are focusing to important virulence factors like biofilm formation and siderophore-mediated iron acquisition systems. Multicenter investigation on more than hundred clinical isolates of A. baumannii from various medical institutions (Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik) in the south Croatia collected in 2009 proved that great number of isolates have ability to form biofilm, and isolates with ability to form biofilm were mostly collected from intensive care units and from respiratory samples.
