Microbial degradation of simulated leachate from tobacco dust waste
The major potential environmental impact related to tobacco dust waste is the generation of leachate which can migrate and pollute groundwater and surface water. This research investigated an aerobic biodegradation of leachate from tobacco dust with high concentrations of COD. Experiments were conducted by activated sludge process in batch conditions with different initial concentrations of leachate and different initial concentrations of activated sludge during 96 hours. Values of COD removal efficiency varied from 80.0 % to 90.8 % for Exp. 1 and from 83.8 % to 95.9 % for Exp. 2. Biokinetic analysis was conducted according to the Monod model. This model gives very good fits to experimental data, accompanied by a high correlation coefficient (R2).
