Water quality monitoring results for the Plitvice Lakes
The complexity and sensitivity of the Plitvice Lakes aquatic ecosystem is best seen in the travertine-building process that ensures the survival of the entire aquatic system. Based on the results obtained from the project that has been done from 2002 to 2005 in Plitvice lakes NP, the researchers proposed methods and parameters for continued monitoring of the Plitvice lakes aquatory. In 2006 the management of the Park started this monitoring and based by the obtained results for physico- chemical parameters, oxygen regime and nutrient concentration, when compared to research results from the period 2002–2004 show that the water quality in Plitvice Lakes has, on average, remained in the categories I and II. Though research results for 2004 show substantially improved water quality in terms of bacteriological parameters in comparison to the 1980s, these monitoring results indicate a slight decline in bacterial water quality over 2004.
