PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF ECOLOGICAL BUILDING MATERIALS
Investigation of partial cement and sand replacement by fly ash waste generated during combustion of wood waste had been studied. Mineral composition and particle size distribution of fly ash justify its application as cement and sand replacement. Addition of up to 20% per cement mass of fly ash decreases particle packing density, capillary absorption, compressive and flexural strength (10-15% at 28 days), and increases volume expansion (within norm limit), and porosity. Optimal mixture design of the novel cementitious materials would be a 15-20% of biomass fly ash loading (per cement mass) for both cement and sand replacement. Particles larger than 80 μm are considered as replacement of sand, while smaller particles replace cement fraction. Taking advantage of this ash will enable the improvement of the environmental acceptability of the construction industry and reduce the need for ash disposal.
