Air-borne fungi in Zagreb and Dubrovnik

From the results obtained it may be concluded that the total number of fungus colonies caught was higher in Dubrovnik than in Zagreb. In the air of Zagreb the fungus that prevails is Cladosporium which at present is considered as one of the possible etiological agents in the occurence of allergic disorders of the respiratory tract. In Dubrovnik, however, the prevailing fungus is Penicillium. As to seasonal variation the highest number of fungus colonies in Zagreb was found in September and in Dubrovnik in February and May 1962. As regards seasonal variations, the occurence of Cladosporium and Alternaria spores in Zagreb is at its height in late summer and early autumn, while in Dubrovnik in June and February. Penicillium is most frequent both in Zagreb and Dubrovnik in spring, late autumn and winter. The Petri dish method does not give a full insight into the occurence of various kinds of air- borne fungi, since the growth of some of them on nutrient media is either delayed or does not occur at all. However, these investigations have given some evidence that there do exist differences in the occurence and seasonal variations of air-borne fungi in Zagreb and Dubrovnik. Simultaneously, investigations by the slides method were also carried out and a comparative study of these results and those obtained with the Petri dish method will be published at a later date. In any case, to obtain more reliable data, the investigations are to be continued for some more years.
