Moss biomonitoring as a tool for mercury air pollution control in Croatia
Moss biomonitoring technique was applied to study mercury air pollution in Croatia since 2006. For this study, 120 moss samples were collected during the summer and autumn of 2006. and 2010. (sampling is also planned for 2015.) all over the territory of Croatia. Distance between sampling points were 23 x 23 km. Sampling sites were located at least 300 m from main roads, 100 m from local roads, and 200 m from villages. Each sample was composed of five to ten sub-samples collected within an area of 50×50 m2, in order to make the moss samples representative. The content of mercury was determined in moss samples by using cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). The overall results of the mercury content as well as the spatial and temporal distribution of mercury in moss in Croatia in 2006., 2010. and 2015. will be presented. The research results will be used for monitoring and modelling of air pollution with mercury and its health impacts in Croatia, i.e. for assessing the environmental and health impacts in Croatia, i.e. for assessing the environmental and health risks of mercury at local, national and international level.
