Seasonal changes in enzyme activities and mineral concentrations in Holstein stallion blood plasma
The aim of this study was to determine seasonal changes in the activity of some enzymes and concentration of some minerals in Holstein stallions, as the literature provides insuffi cient data on that matter. Blood was collected from the jugular vein, with heparin as the anticoagulant. Blood plasma activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), γ-glutamiltransferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK) were determined. Also, concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and copper were measured. Most parameters determined in this study were highest in the summer period. A signifi cant negative correlation between the concentration of calcium and inorganic phosphate was also determined. We can assume that seasonal changes in blood enzyme activities and blood mineral concentrations depend on muscle activity and balanced feed intake.
