The Topography of Abandonment
The line of the DC1, one of Croatia's state roads, which connects the northern and southern parts of the country, and its local roads branching into the lesser known toponyms, tell a rich history, often a grim one. The landscape surrounding the road is dotted with abandoned objects: homes, restaurants, cafés, built in different times and in a variety of styles, in different stages of decay, abandoned for different reasons. This topography of abandonment uncovers layers of history, from the most recent one of the bulk of traffic (mostly the seasonal inflow of tourists) moving on to the new, shiny A1 motorway, to the war of the 1990s, migrations, and so on. This presentation seeks to explore what (hi)stories of (im)mobility the abandoned road buildings can tell.
