CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND ZINC IN HUMAN SEMINAL PLASMA
Background: Despite the fact that sperm function is dependent on ionic environment, its relation to male infertility is yet not clear. However, there is evidence that altered ion levels in seminal plasma correlates with decreased fertility potential. Aim: Objective of this study was to investigate association between concentration of calcium, magnesium and zinc in seminal plasma and some other semen parameters. Methods: Semen samples were obtained from 46 males aged 20 to 48 years. Semen samples were analyzed according to the WHO guidelines. Total calcium, magnesium and zinc concentrations in seminal plasma were determined with colorimetric tests (OLYMPUS). Concordance between variables has been based on Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: We found no correlation between calcium, magnesium and zinc concentrations and conventional semen parameters (sperm count, sperm concentration, vitality, motility and morfology). However, we obtained strong correlation between them (r=0.9813, p<0.0001 with CI 0.9663 to 0.9897 for zinc zinc and magnesium ; r=0.8969, p<0.0001 with CI 0.8191 to 0.9416 for zinc and calcium ; r=0.9351, p<0.0001 with CI 0.8851 to 0.9638 for calcium and magnesium), probably because of their origin from prostate gland. The information brought by these concentrations seems to be redundant. Their role in fertility is yet to be determined.
