Pejsažni prostori utvrđenih srednjovjekovno- renesansnih gradova

The town of Ston (Veliki and Mali Ston) on the Peljesac Peninsula (Dubrovnik area) is an example of a planned fortified dual city from the late Middle Ages inhabited con- tinually from the 14th century. A large city area within the walls (approximately 33% in Veliki Ston and 28% in Mali Ston) includes unbuilt space, largely unregulated land- scape area, without specific purpose. Veliki Ston was selected for the case study due to the fact that large landscape areas with- in the city walls to this day have remained unfinished and without specific purpose. On comparative basis, this research will analyze selected examples of Croatian and European fortified cities of similar charac- teristics, which have a significant share of landscape area inside the fortification. Analyzed under the term landscape areas are unbuilt areas within the walls of Ston and other similar European cities. They are covered with planted or wild vegetation. They can be ordered or unordered, with different purposes: public parks, walking paths, private gardens, unfinished spaces with semi or natural vegetation, agricul- tural areas and others. The town of Ston with its walls was the subject of numerous researches in the 20th century, especially from the conservation point of view. Some studies analyzed the issue of unfinished and unregulated area of the city, mostly in terms of revitalization, historic matrix and the possible purpose. The aim of this research is to identify the factors relevant to the landscape recogni- tion of the historical matrix, the criteria that determine the range of possible interven- tions in the landscape areas of the city, tak- ing into account the degree of protection and cultural and urban value. Methods of analysis and evaluation of the uncomplet- ed landscape parts of the city will be set, applicable to urban planning and design of such spaces. Possible models and types of interventions in non-urbanized areas of the city will be considered.
