Croatian practice and policies of endonym and exonym use considering INSPIRE and NSDI
Because of their character, geographical names are usually divided in endonyms and exonyms. EuroGeoNames, pan-European system of geographical names, originally have databases and user interfaces separately for endonyms and separately for exonyms. New revision of EuroGeoNames system is integrating exonyms and endonyms on the user interface level. Croatian system of geographical names (CroGeoNames) is treating only endonyms. Recently, revision of CroGeoNames system is made. It is now compliant with European spatial data infrastructure and new functionalities are added that allow treatment of exonyms. Standardization of geographical names is made by UNGEGN, but geographical names are also under influence of the standardization of geoinformation. International Standardization Organization (ISO), as fundamental organization for standardization, is influencing standardization of geographical names from geoinformation point of view. It is using sematic approach in standardization of geoinformation. But, ontology is new approach that is under strong development. Geographical names conceptual domain ontology approach can be used as possibility to develop platform for semantic web and better Internet interactions. In the past geographical names were the main tool to make spatial relations and spatial reasoning. They are reflecting spatial relations in historical, cultural and other contexts. After theory of multiple intelligences spatial intelligence is one of the more recognized intelligences. Spatial reasoning using geographical names is the ability to reason about spatial relations using geographical names as objects that are containing spatial information. It is the ability to extract position and orientation from geographical names in everyday life.
