The Nursing Document Management System (NDMS) - Its Current Status in Croatian Acute Care Settings

Healthcare as a very sensitive business system is very careful with implementing new technologies in existing business processes. The impression is that the cornerstones of quality healthcare procedures are sound medical activities and therefore supporting business processes are often neglected. Nursing activities, apart from healthcare, have very intensive administrative procedures which represent the major factor of high quality care. This research is founded on a comparative analysis of the nursing information system of five large Croatian hospitals representing different Croatian regions. The research compares computer literacy of nurses, actual implementation of the nursing document management system in everyday nursing work, and the ways in which information systems influence the quality of the nursing practice. The sample included 217 female and male nurses who worked in acute care settings. The results show that with the higher degree of computer literacy, the easier it is to implement the nursing document management system and the easier it is to use it to a greater and higher degree in everyday nursing work. The perception of importance of nursing document management systems differs between different healthcare institutions, but it is not related to the level of ICT implementation.
