Effect of chemical modification onto structural characteristics of activated carbons

Activated carbons are one of the most used adsorption materials in drinking water treatment produced from carbonaceous materials by two different processes: physical and chemical activation. The physical activation implies material pyrolysis at temperature up to 900 °C and activation of formed char using nitrogen or argon at high temperature while the chemical activation implies carbonization of chemically impregnated carbonaceous material which provides a large surface area able to adsorb many water contaminants. The efficiency and adsorption capacities of activated carbons depend on their physical and chemical structure. Recent studies showed that additional chemical modification of activated carbon’s surface by strong oxidizing agents and subsequent chemical impregnation increased selectivity of activated carbons for some water contaminants such as arsenic, fluorides, nitrate, lead, etc. This study investigated the effect of chemical modification onto structural characteristics of four commercially available activated carbons obtained from different carbonaceous materials. Activated carbons were oxidized using conc. H2O2, conc. HNO3 and mixture of conc. HNO3 and conc. H2SO4. Effects of chemical modification onto adsorbents surface and structure of used activated carbons were determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA).
