Modeling of jet-type surface discharge at Urinj site
This paper presents experimental and theoretical work aimed at predicting thermal-plume behavior from the waste-heat discharge from the Rijeka I power plant presently under construction at the Urinj site. Preoperatìonal measurements of relevant hydrographic and meteorological variables in the site area have been made to provide the necessary input conditions for plume calculations. Most relevant here were vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, current speed, and direction. A model-valídation study was carried out to identify the best model for the conditions at Rijeka I. Three integral and two phenomenological models were tested with laboratory data which represented dis charge and ambient conditions most Like those of Rijeka I. The Shirazi-Davis model, revealed by model/data comparisons as the most capable, was then employed in predicting plumes from Rijeka I under typical discharge and ambient conditions determined from the preoperational field studies. It was found that the plumes from Rijeka I will be small ; often the water at the submerged intake is of lower ambient salinity and temperature, reducing the effective discharge load into the bay.
