Pathogenesis of cytomegalovirus infection in ovary: Mechanisms of differential resistance of corpora lutea and follicles to infection
In this study we have used the murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) model to analyze the impact of cytomegalovirus infection in early pregnancy. We have observed an overwhelming infection of ovarian corpora lutea (CL) which was in a strong contrast to the resistance of ovarian follicles to MCMV infection. The excessive infection of CL granulosa cells, the main producers of progesterone during early pregnancy, was accompanied by a substantial pregnancy loss. Microarray analysis of MCMV infected ovaries revealed a detrimental regulation of key genes involved in the synthesis and degradation of serum progesterone levels as a consequence of virus infection. In addition, we have characterized and discussed the mechanism of differential innate resistance of CL and ovarian follicles to MCMV infection which depends on the cell’s intrinsic antiviral defenses and the immune system.
