Acne vulgaris- an eternal problem
Acne is a one of the most frequently seen chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit, characterized by androgen-induced increased sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinisation, inflammation and altered adaptive immune response. Bacterial colonization by Propionibacterium acnes aggravates the course of the disease. The physical signs of acne are seborrhea, non-inflamed and inflamed lesions, and scaring. Childhood acne can be classified in neonatal, mid-childhood and prepubertal acne, depending on the age of onset. Childhood is a period that requires special consideration as the differentiation of eruptions may prove to be challenging and the use of certain treatments is contraindicated in children. Current treatments include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, topical and systemic antibiotics, and systemic isotretinoin. There are growing concerns of rising antibiotic resistance and significant side effects of isotretinoin therapy. Acne vulgaris also has great influence on the patient's personality and emotional life.
