Symbolism in exercise and sport
The origin of many sports may be traced back to ancient times – sport and exercise were important concepts in old civilizations. Consequently, the concepts of physical exercise, sport and competition are deeply rooted in many traditions. The aim of this paper was to analyze the symbolism of selected implements used in sports on the one hand, and several recreational sporting activities on the other. First, the symbolism of hammer, racket, spear/javelin and ball was investigated. The symbolic meaning was substantiated by the origin of terms. Following this, activities such as walking, hiking, jogging and running were addressed in terms of their symbolic aspects and semantic content. The analysis showed that the concepts under consideration are multilevel phenomena, whose meaning is complex.
